SBR and EPDM Rubber Granules

SBR Rubber Granules (Styrene-Butadiene Rubber)

Styrene-butadiene rubber is one of the most popular materials for creating seamless surfaces, especially on playgrounds, sports arenas, and recreational areas.

What is SBR Rubber Granule?

  • Origin: Made by recycling old car tires.
  • Structure: Small black particles of various sizes (usually 1–4 mm).
  • Composition: A mixture of styrene and butadiene, giving the material elasticity and wear resistance.

Main Advantages of SBR Rubber Granules

  • High elasticity: absorbs impacts and reduces stress on joints and spine.
  • Durability: withstands heavy mechanical loads and frequent use.
  • Chemical resistance: resistant to oils, fuels, and weak acids.
  • Temperature resistance: maintains properties from -30°C to +60°C.
  • Cost-effective: much cheaper than EPDM granules.
  • Eco-friendly: made from recycled materials, helping to reduce waste.

Where is SBR Used?

  • Playgrounds
  • Sports grounds (running tracks, mini-football fields)
  • Recreation areas
  • Parking lots and pedestrian paths
  • Underlays for gym equipment

How is SBR Coating Installed?

  1. Base preparation (concrete or asphalt).
  2. Mixing SBR granules with polyurethane adhesive.
  3. Applying the mixture evenly.
  4. Allowing to cure fully (up to 24 hours).

Often, SBR is used as a shock-absorbing bottom layer in two-layer systems, with the top layer made of more decorative EPDM granules.

EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer)

Ethylene propylene diene monomer is a type of synthetic rubber obtained by polymerizing ethylene, propylene, and a small amount of diene monomer. Thanks to its unique composition, EPDM has excellent properties for outdoor use.

Main Characteristics of EPDM

  • High UV resistance ☀️ (does not fade or crack under sunlight)
  • Excellent ozone and weather resistance 🌧️ (withstands rain, snow, frost, and heat)
  • Flexibility and elasticity 🔄 (retains elasticity even at low temperatures)
  • Durability 🕰️ (service life of EPDM coatings can exceed 15–20 years)
  • Eco-friendly 🌱 (safe for people and the environment)

Where is EPDM Granule Used?

  • Poured-in-place playground surfaces
  • Sports grounds (running tracks, tennis courts)
  • Decorative areas in parks and squares
  • Floors in pools and water parks

Why Choose EPDM Coatings?

  • Wide color palette (allows for bright patterns and designs 🎨)
  • High wear resistance
  • Perfect for high-traffic zones
  • Enhanced safety for children and athletes

Adhesive for Rubber Granules

Usually used for seamless surfaces on playgrounds, sports areas, running tracks, etc. The most common option is polyurethane adhesive.

Main Types of Adhesive

  1. One-component polyurethane adhesive
    • Cures upon contact with moisture from the air.
    • Easy to use, less preparation required.
    • Suitable for small areas or minor repairs.
  2. Two-component polyurethane adhesive
    • Consists of base and hardener mixed before use.
    • Stronger and more durable, recommended for large areas.
    • Requires precise proportioning and mixing time.

Manufacturers and Brands

  • SikaBond
  • Polytan
  • Kraiburg
  • RubberTite
  • Rekortan

What to Pay Attention To

  • Adhesive viscosity (should mix well with rubber granules)
  • Curing time (average 12–24 hours)
